Over the last 7 days, I've gained a new hero in my life! Here's how it happened ...
Last Wednesday, our day began like most of our other days...crazy! Katie had been home from school for a few days battling what we thought was a light case of pneumonia that antibiotics weren't handling. After noticing some more labored breathing, Sarah took Katie to the ER, thinking worst case scenario was she'd have to spend a couple days in the hospital with some stronger IV antibiotics and maybe a chest tube to remove the building fluid. All of that changed the next morning when the surgeon came and said that the x-ray and CT scan showed a mass in her chest. Without a doubt, that was the hardest thing that I've ever heard! I'd never felt more helpless in my life. They quickly scheduled a surgery to biopsy the mass and to remove the fluid around her lung that was hindering her breathing. And then we waited. For five long days, we waited. Sometimes we waited and had absolute trust in God, and other times we waited with crippling fear and anxiety. We were so thankful for the faithful and intense prayers of our family and friends. But, those were also some of the times that I was most encouraged by the Spirit and by God's Word. The Bible really was alive and active, and during a particular time when I was consumed with fear, I took a few minutes and wrote down what I know is true about God.
And then on Tuesday afternoon (3 days ago), we got the diagnosis ... Hodgkin lymphoma. While it was not the diagnosis that we were hoping for, we were so thankful that it is a type of cancer that responds very well to chemotherapy. We're learning more with each day, but it's good to have a name for what we're fighting. We still have a few more tests to run early next week before the treatment plan gets finalized. The great news was that Katie was able to come home on Thursday! It was great to get our family back together again before the journey begins. The kids are handling it well and were back to their usual incredibly loud and wild selves after about 10 minutes! :) A couple of prayer requests:
I have a new hero, and her name is Katie! In Christ, -Chad
